👩🍳 👨🚀 Are you doing what you love? 👩💻 👨🔬 Here are some common reasons why people do not follow their passion when choosing their career:📌 You don’t know what your passions are. Many educational establishments have been brilliant at educating us while somewhat neglecting our need to find something productive to do with our degrees.If you’re of my generation (i.e. an elder millennial) was your university career counselling any good? 💸 You do know what your passions are but“Pursue your dreams is how you become homeless!”. Thanks to Hong Kong-American standup comedian, Jimmy O Yang, and his dad for this quote (video 👇 ). I agree: the overwhelming feeling of a certain generation is that “Everyone does what they hate for money, and use the money to do what they love”. What a sad state of affairs, even if entirely hilarious as standup. 👩🎓 "My dad wants me to be a surgeon!" In many families, the only choice available is to become a doctor, a lawyer, or to continue the family business. Of course we all want to please our parents, but you only have one life to live and, well, you know what you have to do. It'll be painful short term and entirely worth it in the long run. 🔥 FIRE! In recent years, the FIRE movement - Financial Independence Retire Early - gained a lot of followers. Stories circulated of people picking the most financially rewarding degrees, cashing in at their jobs in their 20s, investing like mad, and retiring in their 30s and 40s as millionaires. The stories were inspirational, don’t get me wrong, but think about it: people who do what they love rarely want to retire (not to mention that retirement is arguably an outdated construct (but that’s for another post)). We live in unprecedented times. It’s easier than ever:-to educate yourself on pretty much anything on this planet;-to raise financing for a new venture;-to market yourself and your business to people who might be interested; and-to make money from niche pursuitsWhy are you still dragging your feet every day to do something that does nothing for you? #dotheworkyoulove #lifecoaching #careersatisfaction

So, as a STRATEGY we should put efforts to instill BEHAVIOURAL EXCELLENCE MODEL in our SOCIETY, INSTITUTIONS and ORGANISATIONS and recognise the ROLE MODELS among the wards to inspire others. As parents and grandparents, we should pass on our accumulated VALUES and BEHAVIORAL MODELS to our heirs and transfer our ASSETS to family TRUST as a supportive cushion to take care of the NEEDS of the heirs (provided they practice BEHAVIOURAL EXCELLENCE NORMS). 💸 💰 As if I would forget! 💰 💸 Last week I wrote about the most common reasons why you probably did not follow your passion in choosing your career. I came up with four.But there is a fifth and very important reason why you’re probably doing a job you just about tolerate...... and that’s MONEY.It's probably one of two things:1. You are either in debt - my American friends will know what I’m talking about quite viscerally because it’s very easy to become hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and then spend decades trying to pay it off, shackled to a job which sounded so glossy when you were a student but is now the bane of your existence;or2. You’ve become so accustomed to your salary and the resulting lifestyle that you’re unable to save enough what we call “f*ck you” money to blow it all up and pivot. Whichever it is, it is totally understandable.The main thing you need to know is that none of it is insurmountable. I have a client with whom I’ve worked for over a year. They are a teacher in the UK; you know how much teachers make, right? Over this year we’ve put together a plan that allows them to do exactly what they want: leave their job, travel, and set up their own business. And that plan naturally included careful financial planning. They've done what was needed and are now reaping the rewards. You see: where there is a will there is always a way. Let's talk about age at work - too old or too young the appearance of one or the other. This weekend, CBC/Radio-Canada focused the #CrossCountryCheckUp on the topic of ageism in the workplace.Sharing my experiences on the show, I reflected on how ageism in the context of being or looking too young is just like every other bias, usually quite subtle. You don't know it for sure, but you can sense that something more than your merit is finding its way into the equation.
