UFC 290 live stream results and play-by-play updates: Alexander Volkanovski vs. Yair Rodriguez featherweight championship title fight tops the UFC 290 pay-per-view (PPV) main card on ESPN+ TONIGHT (Sat., July 8, 2023) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, a five-round showdown that will unify the 145-pound titles. 145 lbs.: UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski vs. UFC Interim Featherweight titleholder Yair Rodriguez

Round 1: Volkanovski pushing forward, switching stance as he does and flashing feints. Slick Brazilian kick from Rodriguez misses by inches. One minute in. Both looking for low kicks. Body kick by Rodriguez. Volkanovski catches the next one and dumps him down into guard. He scoots Rodriguez to the fence, keeping plenty of head pressure. Two minutes in. Body-body-head. Lots of pressure by Volkanovski, Rodriguez trying to latch onto a wrist. Solid elbows from Volkanovski with two minutes to go.

Rodriguez gets a bit of space and stands. Volkanovski keeping him stuck against the fence, trips him back to the mat. Solid right hand on the way up. He snuffs out a granby roll, takes half guard, and goes to work with punches. One minute to go. Looking for an arm triangle, loses it. He postures up again to drop more punches. Rodriguez regains guard before the bell. 10-9 Volkanovski.

Round 2: Volkanovski is sporting a cut from one of Rodriguez’s elbows off his back. Rodriguez fires head kicks, lands a body kick. Solid blitz, jumping head kick just misses. He tries to go low-high. Slick front kick a minute in. Volkanovski continuing to switch stance as he advances. Hard counter two-piece stings Rodriguez, who hurts Volkanovski in return with a counter right as he backs himself to the fence. Volkanovski changes levels and takes him down, looking for the back. Rodriguez stands, gets tripped back down into half guard two minutes in. Solid elbows from Volkanovski. Brief pause after Rodriguez toe gets caught on Volkanovski’s shorts. Rodriguez stands, gets dragged back down and warned for grabbing the gloves. Volkanovski landing punches from turtle, back to half guard with two minutes to go.

Hard elbows from Volkanovski and now Rodriguez is cut as well. Left hands as well. Rodriguez regains guard, eats punches after a submission attempt goes nowhere. One minute to go. Nasty ground-and-pound from Volkanovski. Brutal right hands. Rodriguez tries to roll, no dice, throws elbows off his back. One last big elbow by Volkanovski. 10-9 Volkanovski.

Round 3: Ref gives Rodriguez a “hard warning” for grabbing the gloves and fence before they begin. He tries some front kicks and a Brazilian kick, nothing lands. Solid combo. Big counter right by Volkanovski. One minute in. Rodriguez tries a head kick. Jab and low kicks by Volkanovski. Hard 1-2 from Rodriguez, his best shots in a while. Spinning back kick behind it two minutes in. Low kicks landing for Rodriguez. He’s getting a bit of momentum, denying a takedown from Volkanovski. More low kicks, mixing in front kicks as well. Shifting right hook by Volkanovski with two minutes to go.

Clash of heads pauses things. Glancing Brazilian kick from Rodriguez when they resume. Jumping switch kick blocked. Good uppercut and low kick, then a right hand in combiantion. He tries to follow up with a body kick, but while he’s on one leg, Volkanovski hurts him with a hard right hook.. Volkanovski bullies him to the fence, hammers at his body, then slams him to the mat. He’s going for the kill, standing over a turtling Rodriguez and unloading with both hands. The onslaught shows no signs of slowing down and in comes the ref.

Final result: Volkanovski def. Rodriguez by TKO (punches) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!

125 lbs.: UFC Flyweight champion Brandon Moreno vs. Alexandre Pantoja

Round 1: They collide in the opening seconds, Pantoja hunting for a takedown and Moreno reversing to put him on the fence. One minute in. Pantoja tries a foot sweep and exits with a knee. Stiff jabs from Moreno and a combo behind them. Pantoja ties up, can’t hit a trip two minutes in. Another brief clinch, elbow from Pantoja on the exit. Moreno comes back with a hard 1-2. Pantoja suddenly uncorks a big left hook that sends Moreno to the mat, following into half guard and going to work with elbows. Two minutes to go.

Moreno trying to kick him away, makes it to his feet. He’s cut bad by his right eye but the spot doesn’t look bad. Sharp 1-2 form Moreno. Pantoja comes back with heavy punches, stinging Moreno with another left hook and a knee behind it. Pantoja trying to maul inside with a minute to go. Moreno gets space and gets his jab going. Pantoja firs a head kick, slips, then charges in for another clinch. Rear body lock, sneaky knee. 10-9 Pantoja.

Round 2: Moreno continuing to ump the jab. Pantoja throws heat in return and they unload on each other in the center. Sharp 1-2 by Moreno, heavy jabs behind it. He’s picking Pantoja off with clean shots. Pantoja shoots, lands a backfist. Bouncing jabs off each other’s faces. One minute in. Hard 1-2 from Pantoja. Left hook in a flurry. Moreno looks for a standing back take, manages to take Pantoja down and insert both hooks. Two minutes in. Pantoja spins free but Moreno lands on top. He scrambles to his feet with two minutes to go.

They get right back to blasting each other with heavy shots and it’s Moreno landing all the good stuff. Things slow down for a bit until Moreno lands a left hook and Pantoja comes back with a hard low kick. One minute to go. Front kick from Pantoja. Stiff jab. Nice counter hook by Moreno, continuing to plug Pantoja with clean jabs. Big 1-2, bigger left hook by Pantoja in return. Moreno catches a kick for a takedown in the final seconds. 10-9 Moreno.

Round 3: Pantoja opens the round with a knee to the unmentionables, though Moreno doesn’t take time to recover. Moreno lands a heavy counter elbow that splits Pantoja open, but Pantoja just wades through it to tie up on the fence and take Moreno’s back. Body triangle a minute in. Solid punches from Pantoja, but Moreno turns to land on top in guard before letting Pantoja up. Left hands piling up for Moreno, who eats a nasty left hook to no ill effect. Big exchanges, nice head kick by Moreno. They’re blasting away in center cage. Two minutes to go.

3-2-head kick by Moreno, then a jab behind it. Pantoja looks like damaged goods but he’s indefatigable, shooting in once again. Moreno defends, eats a body shot, gets muscled down into guard. Moreno looking for an omoplata, no dice, but a great scramble puts him on top. Heavy upkick by Pantoja, then some big elbows off his back with a minute to go. Pantoja gets to his feet. They trade jabs, then left hooks at the bell. This fight f*ckin’ rules. 10-9 Pantoja.

Round 4: Trading jabs to start. Moreno’s is still the sharper of the two. Low-high left hooks from Moreno, who absorbs a looping right hook to rip the body. Trading bombs in the center once again. God, this is a slugfest. One minute in. Hard body shot and elbow by Moreno but again Pantoja just eats it to take him down into side control. Great scramble by Moreno, Pantoja still attached. Jockeying for position two minutes in. Pantoja pulls him down to land on top, avoiding a leglock attempt to take side control. Moreno turns to his knees and they stall out in the sprawl position. Pantoja spins to the back with two minutes to go.

Moreno gets the hooks out but can’t get Pantoja off of him. Pantoja holding onto the rear body lock. Pantoja pulls him down for another takedown with a minute to go and there’s an arm triangle there, but Moreno capitalizes to sweep into top guard. Hard upkicks from Pantoja as Moreno tries to drop ground-and-pound. Pantoja kicks him off and they’re slugging once again. Pantoja shoots, denied, eats elbows. 10-9 Pantoja.

Round 5: Moreno stalking forward as both men pump their jabs. Heavy combo from Pantoja. Big uppercut a minute in. Both rip left hooks and Pantoja waves him on. Pantoja’s getting the better of these exchanges in the early going. Sharp jabs from Moreno. Simultaneous left hooks two minutes in. The pace is slower but the tension’s still high. There we go, now they’re ripping proper bombs again. Big elbow by Moreno met by body shots. More elbows by Moreno and Pantoja just bulldozes him to that mat. Half guard at the base of the fence. Two minutes to go.

Pantoja jumps on his back and he’s got the standing body triangle. They’re deadlocked there, Moreno fighting Pantoja’s hands. Pantoja gets his hands free and starts softening him up. One minute to go. Looking for the RNC. Moreno’s fighting the hands well but he can’t get Pantoja off of him. Magical fight, easily one of the best of 2023, and I do believe Alexandre Pantoja has done it. 10-9 Pantoja.

185 lbs.: Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis

Round 1: Du Plessis on the front foot, looking for leg kicks. Counter right by Whittaker. Du Plessis blocks some swings, falls short with his own a minute in. Clean counter jab from Whittaker to answer a leg kick. Whittaker goes low kick to jabs to double-leg, avoiding a guillotine to settle on top two minutes in. Du Plessis quickly works his way to his feet and separates. Snap kick and overhand right from Whittaker. Du Plessis still pushing forward, dings Whittaker with a short right hand. Two minutes to go.

Du Plessis puts together a solid blitz. Knee inside met by a Whittaker overhand. Du Plessis throwing a lot in the latter half of the round. They tie up and Du Plessis muscles Whittaker to the mat, looking for a d’arce with a minute to go. On top in guard. Looking for the d’arce again, then postures up to drop some solid strikes in the final seconds. 10-9 Du Plessis.

Round 2: Early low kick from Du Plessis. Whittaker looks for a head kick, lands a counter jab and 1-2. Long Whittaker right met by a 1-2. Short Whittaker right. One minute in. Du Plessis’ gas tank looking better than usual. Jab to head kick from Whittaker, both blocked. Du Plessis answers with a body kick, eats a jab as they separate. Two minutes in. A jab catches Whittaker coming in and he’s hurt bad. Du Plessis swarming with power punches and he refuses to let up, smashing his way to a massive upset win.

Final result: Du Plessis def. Whittaker by TKO (punches) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!

155 lbs.: Dan Hooker vs. Jalin Turner

Round 1: Quick calf kick from Hooker to start. Damn, that size difference is wild. Lots of lateral movement by Hooker as Turner advances. Low kicks by Turner answered in kind. Three-piece lands for him. Hooker comes back with an inside low kick that lands to the groin. Turner takes a bit of time to recover, but they’re soon back to it. One minute in. Hooker really focusing on attacking the lead leg. Turner looks for a head kick. Solid body kick two minutes in. Spinning back kick soon after. Hooker lands an uppercut inside and follows with a body kick. Head kick attempt, low kick lands. Two minutes to go.

They trade leg kicks, Turner follows with a body kick. More body kicks. Hooker shoots, eats another body kick. Body kick and counter jab land for Hooker. Hooker body kick, Turner counter right. One minute to go. Nice head kick from Hooker and Turner unloads some heavy body and head shots in return. Turner lands a body kick and they slug it out inside. Turner counters a low kick with more combos, Hooker fires back. 10-9 Turner.

Round 2: Hooker having success with all these low kicks. Low-high combo, leg kick. Body kick by Turner; that’s been his most effective technique so far. One minute in. Turner answers a lead right with a knee. Another heavy snap kick downstairs, counter 1-2 to answer a leg kick. Hooker counter jab. Two minutes in. Turner mixes it up with a left high kick that lands perfectly. Hooker somehow absorbs it and looks for a takedown, but Turner’s on the attack, landing nasty elbows and knees. He goes back to the body kick when the finish isn’t there. Hooker’s split open, though not in a bad spot. Two minutes to go.

Counter two-piece by Turner. Head kick attempt blocked, counter right lands for him. Hooker catches him with a 1-2 as he retreats. Solid straight left appears to buzz Hooker for a second. One minute to go. Solid combo by Hooker and now Turner may be hurt. Hooker firing volleys of punches as Turner looks to answer with elbows. Turner yells for him to come on, but slips throwing a knee. Hooker looking for the back in the final seconds, wraps up the RNC, but Turner’s saved by the bell. 10-9 Hooker.

Round 3: Hooker comes out throwing, stinging Turner again right off the bat. Turner goes back to the body kicks, walking Hooker down. Heavy punches from Turner now, then a counter knee. Turner landing lefts but now it’s Hooker on the advance. Good shots on the fence. One minute in. Turner lingering on the fence, then hits a surprise double-leg. Hooker kicks him off and they trade heat inside. Hooker’s matching him blow-for-blow and a heavy blitz sends Turner to the mat once again. Hooker on top in full guard. Two minutes to go.

Turner trying to bring up his guard for a potential triangle, but nothing’s there. One minute to go. Short punches from Hooker. Turner muscles his way back to his feet, tries a takedown, lands a body kick. Turner tries to chase him down, can’t do so. 10-9 Hooker.

Final result: Hooker def. Turner by split decision — SEE SCORECARD!

185 lbs.: Bo Nickal vs. Valentine Woodburn

Round 1: Nickal fires a long left, shoots, rebuffed. Seconds later, he steps in with a right hook that has Woodburn doing the chicken dance. Nickal hammers him with punches until an uppercut sends him wobbling to the mat and the ref jumps in. May have been a smidge early, but regardless, impressive performance.

Final result: Nickal def. Woodburn by TKO (punches) — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!
